Cone of Cogency

Part One:
Define Parody. From Postmodernism > Related to Modernism > Define Post Modernism by it's relation to Modernism > Introduce the idea of Structuralism and Post Structuralism > Follow up by introducing Meta narratives and how they relate to both forms of Structuralism > Bathes and how he feels about Meta narratives, as well as his 'Death of the Author' theory> 'Death of the Author' and how it relates to Parody, reader interpretations of a text allows for a parody interpretation of said text or texts

Define Genre. Began as a classification system in Ancient Greek Literature, most Greek actors were restricted to only acting for one genre > Over time Genre became a tool for the public to make sense out of unpredictable art, and to predict what may occur in what texts they are viewing.
Define Tropes. Tropes are visual actions or metaphors used to quickly convey a concept or meaning > Often taken and reused by other texts and media.

Part Two:
How are tropes and genre used to create parody film? > The stories in the texts are deconstructed and interpreted differently. Plays on audience expectations of genre to say something about it, for example to criticise, to milk a dying genre for money (as some genres and tropes become so overused it's very easy to parody)
How are things parodied on screen? Parody of character and/or current events> SNL version of Donald Trump. Parody of Story > Life of Brian> Parody of the story of Christ.

Part Three:
Case Study- Spaceballs > Parody of Star Wars > Dark Helmet is a blatant parody of Darth Vader > Vader character's was reworked from a big bad villain to a comic relief character.
Was it successful? > What impact did it have? Was there a lasting effect on the genre?

  1. Hey Ollie - so I think you need to structure this a bit differently... as I think readers will need to understand the relationship between genre and ideology before you can tell them about deconstruction. For most readers, genre might be considered a neutral envelope in which 'stuff happens', as opposed to it being expressive of normativity and ideology. The idea of meta-fiction and deconstruction more generally all rest on the threshold concept that 'representation is ideological' - they are both 'critiques' inspired/powered by an understanding that genre isn't neutral, so I think you need to prove this first, before you can introduce the various challenges to it.

As discussed, I don't think Spaceballs is going to cut it as a case-study because it's probably just too old...
